10 of our favourite Dobby moments

house elf harry potter

House-elves have a very powerful magic all their own, magic which requires none of the types of focusing tools (wands or words) that Wizard magic requires. Dobby used his magic to enchant a Bludger, to close the magic portal that leads to platform nine-and-three-quarters, to interfere with Owl Post and steal someone’s letters, and to knock Lucius Malfoy down a flight of stairs. He also can disappear at will, which would seem to be a form of Apparition, but a form which can be done within Hogwarts, where, as Hermione constantly reminds Harry and Ron, normal Wizarding Apparition is simply not possible. Dobby has huge, green, tennis ball-sized eyes and a long thin nose like a pencil (CS1, CS2). He is quite short, like all house-elves, coming only up to Harry’s navel (GF21). He is devoted to Harry Potter and also to Ron Weasley, who he refers to as Harry’s “Wheezy.” Dobby is particularly fond of socks and used his earnings to buy yarn and knit them himself (GF23).

Unlike Dobby, Winky was someone who felt lost when she was handed her own freedom. When we met Winky, she was serving the Crouch family – as her mother, and her grandmother before her did – until she was abruptly fired after being implicated in the casting of the Dark Mark in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Despite the multitude of ways in which Dobby accidentally caused more aggro for Harry, at the end of Chamber of Secrets, Harry freed Dobby from his servitude – tricking Lucius Malfoy into handing the house-elf a sock.

Kreacher

Kreacher was also considered to be slightly mad, probably from being stuck in the Blacks' house alone for so long. Kreacher was a male house-elf who served the House of Black with fanatical loyalty for most of his life, until he was left to Harry Potter upon the death of Sirius Black in 1996. Harry finally won Kreacher over by giving him the fake locket from Regulus to keep as his own, and asking him to find Mundungus Fletcher, whom Kreacher had seen stealing the real locket as he trashed Grimmauld Place looking for things to sell.

Harry also congratulated him when he succeeded in capturing Mundungus Fletcher. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Kreacher led the house elves against Lord Voldemort and his followers, telling them to fight for Harry and the deceased Regulus. Kreacher was very loyal to all the members of the Black family except Sirius Black, whom he hated because he treated Kreacher poorly. He had a strong bond with Sirius' brother, Regulus Black and was devastated by his death. Kreacher was usually hostile, bitter and miserable and had a habit of insulting people, including his masters.

Despite being dismissed, Winky retained her loyalty towards her old masters, especially Barty Crouch Snr, and as a result was dismissive of Albus Dumbledore, her succeeding master. She had traditional views about house-elves and considered being set free or being paid disgraceful. She also was very caring to Barty Crouch Jnr, as his usual keeper, though Barty Jnr thought she cared for him mostly out of pity and her sense of duty. When Winky discovered that Barty Jnr killed Barty Snr, she was horrified and devastated. From her depression she developed alcoholism, drinking butterbeer severely, which she never truly recovered from.

However, Hermione's kindness towards Kreacher eventually started to change his attitude towards her, and before going on his search for Mundungus Fletcher he gave her a little spasm, which was supposed to be a respectful salute. Kreacher was extremely devoted to all members of the Black family except Sirius Black, whom he hated. He especially held Walburga Black in high regard and spoke to her portrait with devoted affection.

Crouch expressed his belief that Winky's care was no more than duty and pity, and did not reciprocate in the least. It is unknown if he continued to work in the Hogwarts kitchens or entered the service of the Potter family, or possibly both. Kreacher's whereabouts during the following period is unknown, but it's known that sometime before the Battle of Hogwarts he somehow came to the Hogwarts kitchens. Dobby the House Elf is featured in this ornament attempting to keep Harry Potter from returning to Hogwarts.

Serving the Crouch family (?–

We know that House Elves do not carry wands, and so there is certainly a difference in the way magic is produced; however, apparently House-Elf magic can be stopped by human magic, as Mundungus Fletcher is able to loot Grimmauld Place despite Kreacher's efforts to stop him. This ability of House Elves to Apparate where humans cannot plays a fairly important role later in the series as well. Countless house-elves served in the halls of Hogwarts, cleaning, cooking and delivering trunks, among other tasks. Hermione disrupted the regularity with her S.P.E.W. activism but, like those she was trying to help, she certainly meant well. The last we saw of the house-elves in the story, they were mingling with others after the Battle of Hogwarts.

Kreacher often attempted to calm her portrait down when it flew into a rage and referred to it as his mistress even though it wasn't truly Walburga (who had long since perished). Sirius claimed that he was slightly less devoted to Sirius' father than he was to Walburga, though this did not stop Kreacher from trying to save Orion's old ring and a pair of his trousers. It's likely that he held the other members of the family with similar affection and devotion. Considering Kreacher was disloyal to people who treated him in a horrible manner, the Black family must have treated him with some form of acceptable kindness, or at least been successful in brainwashing him into servitude. One family member who is confirmed to have treated Kreacher well, is Regulus. While he assisted Regulus in trying to bring Voldemort down, this did not stop him from assisting the Dark Lord through Bellatrix and the Malfoys some fifteen years later.

The upper limits of elf magic were not known; however, it was incredibly versatile and allowed them to perform very powerful magic. Willed to be absolutely obedient to every word and command, a house-elf's only escape would be freedom via the gift of clothes by their master. Dobby, the house-elf belonging to the Malfoys, demonstrated that, in some circumstances, a house-elf could resist the bond to their master, but it would cause them great physical and emotional pain. The majority of the wizarding world don’t want to pay for the services of an elf when they can get it for nothing. So, while it was excellent that Dobby no longer had to answer to anyone – he was still in a tricky spot.

They obey their owner even if they get treated unkindly or ordered to do anything that will cause them harm. They might not want to do what they are told, but they very rarely fail to do so. If they even think about going against their owner's wishes, and speak ill of their owner, they will punish themselves. For example, Kreacher was once simply demanded by Sirius Black to "get out". Sirius meant the kitchen but he chose to interpret it to mean that he had to "get out" of the house even though he knew that was not the intention.

She was distraught when she was let go from her position with the Crouch family, and failed to adapt to her new position at Hogwarts, descending into despair and drink. Even when treated so badly, she refused, ever, to speak ill of her family. Dobby was a house-elf, much shorter in stature than humans, standing only about 3 and a half feet (1.06 m). He had large, tennis-ball-like green eyes,[4] a pencil-like nose and long,[27] bat-like pointed ears[4] and brown skin.[5] Before he was given freedom, he wore a body-covering pillowcase. Later at Hogwarts, he wore a mismatched variety of jumpers, shorts, and socks.

Not only was he back near his dear Harry, but he also didn’t have to compromise on his desire to get paid for his work. The Ministry of Magic officials then revived Winky and blamed her for casting the Dark Mark with the wand, despite Winky claiming she didn't know how to. Though he indignantly claimed that blaming Winky was implying that she learned how to do such a thing at his own home, Crouch Snr freed Winky to avoid associating himself with the Dark Mark, and as it was apparent to him, Winky's guardianship of his son was unreliable.

However, house-elves consider it shameful to be unemployed, get paid for their work, go against their owner's demands or speak ill of them. Dobby was an exception, having served a family who abused him and were involved in illegal business, but other house-elves look at Dobby in disdain. He had a few – let’s call it ‘curious’ – judgement issues (like that time he sent a jinxed Bludger after Harry during a Quidditch match), but he always meant well. Dobby initially served the Malfoy family but was set free when Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving him a sock.

The most well-known example of this in the English-speaking world is the Brownie, a small fairy-like creature who helps around a home in exchange for daily food and drink (in the form of hot milk, honey and gruel) but will depart forever if it is paid in human money. Later in life, Hermione would advance the rights of house-elves in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, before transferring to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Dobby was responsible for giving Harry some… interesting gifts over the years. We couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of Dobby painstakingly trying to capture Harry’s likeness – only for it to be compared to a 'gibbon that had been in a fight'... During Barty Crouch Jnr's confession to impersonating Mad-Eye Moody to put Harry Potter's name into the Goblet of Fire, Winky became quite distressed. She did not want to believe that her beloved master had committed such acts of evil, and took the news horribly, going from shock to sobbing tearfully by the end.
